BB: Nielsen's 7 RBI Lifts Utes to Win Against Aztecs
May 25th, 2011SAN DIEGO - Trey Nielsen had a monster day at the plate with seven RBI while Rick Anton pitched a solid game on the mound as the Utah baseball team defeated San Diego State, 7-3, to open the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
In the seventh inning with Utah holding a 3-2 lead, Nielsen came to the plate with the bases loaded and broke the game open with a shot over the left field fence to put Utah up 7-2. This followed a three-RBI double in the first inning that put Utah on the board, 3-0.
Nielsen's seven RBI ties for the second-most in a MWC Tournament game.
Rick Anton held off the Aztec bats, allowing two runs on six hits through eight innings. He struck out seven and earned the win to raise his record to 9-1 on the year. SDSU was forced into leaving runners on base in all but one inning.
"Trey came through big time for us today," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "He had two really good swings in big situations for us. He was the hero of the day along with Rick. This is the third time that San Diego State has seen him, and they had a good game plan against him. Rick was able to get out of jams with key pitches. That was outstanding."
Tyler Wagner entered late in the ninth and earned the save, his 12th of the season. Stephen Streich also pitched in the ninth inning.
Nielsen and Jo Jo Sharrar were both 2-for-4 on the day to lead Utah at the plate.
The Utes will play the winner of the TCU/UNLV game, which starts at 7:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday. Utah will play on Thursday, May 26, at 7:00 p.m. PT (8:00 p.m. MT). The game will be televised on The Mtn.
