MADE FOR A WOMAN BUT MORE THAN STRONG ENOUGH FOR THE TROOPS ON THE AIR FORCE GRID IRON

September 28, 2009, 2:45 pm
Bands, tubing, wobble boards and fit balls are nixing the heavy metal in football training. It is all part of a new wave that is producing stronger, faster and more coordinated football players at the Air Force Academy. Some of the players thought the workouts were somewhat "girlie" at first, but after weeks of unconventional moves they knew they were in for a winning season. Air Force Strength and Conditioning coach Matt McGettigan says he looks at the athlete first and football second. He says working the core with balance moves, pusing flexibility and regenerating muscles with foam rollers at the end of workouts, is creating efficiency and explosiveness in players. Yes, heavy metal pumping is still part of the program but it's not the focus.

If you want to see what is missing from your training, check out the non-traditional moves some of the players showed me.

HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES REACH COLLEGE DREAMS WITH CLICK OF A MOUSE

September 28, 2009, 2:40 pm
High School students now have access to the kind of information one could only dream of years back. Now with a couple of clicks on the computer, participants can compare themselves to any athlete in the world within seconds. It is called SPARQ training which stands for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness. All these elements are tested and measured, then put into the SPARQ data base. The Sparqulator then spits out a number and percentage so athletes can see how they compare and how they can improve.

24 Hour Fitness Master Trainer, John Faczak shows some moves he throws at Bennett High School students in Colorado as part of the SPARQ training. He designed a program for the team based on their weaknesses during SPARQ testing. He says athletes must score in the top 90-percent in order to have a chance at their college dreams. See if these moves can improve your game. Go to www.sparqtraining.com for more information.
