TF: Tibbs in Eighth after First Day

DES MOINES, Iowa – With 3,359 points, Air Force rising sophomore Michael Tibbs currently sits in eighth after the first day of decathlon competition at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships this evening (June 23) in Des Moines, Iowa. After five events, Tibbs is eighth among the 17 total participants of the junior national competition.

Tibbs opened the day with a 12th-place time of 11.71 in the 100-meter dash, before finishing eighth in the long jump with a distance of 20’10”. He improved his career-best distance in the shot put to 43’0½” (a PR by over four feet) to finish fourth in the field. Tibbs also recorded a personal-best mark in the high jump, as he finished ninth with a height of 6’0½”. He concluded his first day of national competition with a time of 53.75 in the 400-meter dash.

Tibbs returns to the field tomorrow (June 24) to compete in his final five events of the USATF Junior Championships. In addition to Tibbs, the Air Force program will be represented by former Academy standout Sean Houseworth, who will compete in the finals of the 10,000-meter run at the senior-level meet of the national championships.
