Teams to Remember: 1990 UNLV Runnin' Rebels

The nine institutions that comprise the Mountain West Conference have boasted many teams across several sports which have attained success on a national scale over the years.  Teams to Remember recounts some of the notable teams that hold a special place in Conference lore.

Nearly 20 years after the UNLV men’s basketball team won the National Championship, the 1990 Runnin’ Rebels highlight this latest one-hour episode of Teams to Remember, which premieres Monday, March 1 at 7 p.m. MT.

The Runnin’ Rebels opened the 1989-90 season a preseason No. 1 in most polls and entered the 1990 NCAA Tournament a No. 1 seed in the West Region, setting a scoring record by collecting 571 points in six games.  Trailing Georgia Tech by seven at the half in the national semifinal, UNLV rallied in the second half to notch an 90-81 win and a date with Duke for the National Championship.

Led by All-Americans Larry Johnson, Stacy Augmon and Greg Anthony, the Runnin’ Rebels went on to defeat the Blue Devils in the NCAA title game 103-73 and claim UNLV’s only men’s basketball National Championship.  The 30-point margin of victory in the final is a record that still stands today.

Hosted by Tim Neverett, Teams to Remember: 1990 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels incorporates key moments and highlights from the season and interviews with many of the names and faces that UNLV fans will remember from the 1989-90 season, some of whom include:
