SAN DIEGO, Calif. Second-seeded and 25th-ranked BYU defeated top-seeded and No. 24 New Mexico, 1-0, to capture the 2010 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship Saturday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, Calif. With the victory, the Cougars earn the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

"I think in the second half we knew it was probably going to come down to one goal," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "New Mexico has had a great year, they've proven to be one of the best defenses in the country and they haven't given up goals. So we knew if we were going to win it was probably going to come down to one shot, and Jessica Ringwood stepped up and got her shot off and gave us the game winner."

Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but had their chances to score. BYU's Carlee Payne recorded the Cougars' top chance when she blasted a shot from 10 yards out at the 8:17 mark. The attempt was saved by New Mexico goalkeeper Kelli Cornell and the deflected shot hit the cross bar, but did not cross the goal line. The Lobos had a golden opportunity in the 22nd minute when Roxie McFarland ripped an uncontested shot that went right.

BYU broke the scoreless draw in the 63rd minute when Jessica Ringwood fired a shot from the right side that hit the cross bar and, unlike Payne's first-half attempt, ended up breaking the plane and going into the net. Payne was credited with an assist on the play. Eight minutes later in the 71st minute, New Mexico nearly leveled the score when Zaneta Wyne's attempt from 31 yards out ricocheted off the cross bar. After the near scare, the Cougars managed to thwart the Lobos' remaining scoring opportunities the rest of the way to secure the victory.

BYU finished the match with an advantage in shots (12-10), but New Mexico owned a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars had five corner kicks, while the Lobos finished the contest with one.
