It’s Super Bowl season now with the NFL down to four teams vying for the ultimate trophy. A good number of players who played their college ball for Mountain West Conference schools have made it to the big game over the years.

Who are the best of the group? Here are my picks; some old, some new. All super talented.

For the sake of putting together a solid, complete team, I’m including players from Boise State, Hawaii, Fresno State and Nevada. They added a lot. This list showcases some of the rich history of MWC schools.

Agree or disagree with the list?

Head Coach: Joe Gibbs, SDSU/Washington Redskins. Three Super Bowl titles. A nod to George Seifert, Utah/San Francisco 49ers with two Super Bowl wins.

QB – Steve Young, BYU/San Francisco 49ers. Edges another former Cougar, Jim McMahon, but Young’s performance in the 1994 Super Bowl against San Diego was off the charts. Two time league MVP and Super Bowl MVP…and Pro Football Hall of Famer. McMahon was the better ‘rapper.’

RB (2) – Marshall Faulk, SDSU/St. Louis Rams. Headliner in “the Greatest Show on Turf” and maybe the best dual threat back ever; Jim Kiick, Wyoming/Miami Dolphins key part of unbeaten Super Bowl champs in 1972.

WR (2) –  Steve Smith, Utah/Carolina Panthers. All-Pro Scored a TD in ’03 Super Bowl. Would also be our kick returner; Golden Richards, Hawaii/Dallas Cowboys. Super Bowl champ known for his long blonde hair and acrobatic catches.

TE – TIE, (aka a cop out) Todd Christensen, BYU/ Oakland Raiders, two-time Super Bowl champion; Jay Novacek, Wyoming/ Dallas Cowboys, three Super Bowl rings.

OL (5) – Jesse Sapolu, Hawaii/San Francisco 49ers FOUR time Super Bowl champ; Mark Tuinei, Hawaii/Dallas Cowboys. Two Super Bowl rings; Jason Buck, BYU/Washington Redskins. Outland winner and Super Bowl champ; Adrian Klemm, Hawaii/New England Patriots. Three-time Super Bowl champ; Michael Toudouze, TCU/Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl winner as a rookie.

K – Jason Elam, Hawaii/Denver Broncos. Two-time Super Bowl champ and record holder for longest field goal in NFL history (tied with Tom Dempsey at 63 yards).

P – Lee Johnson, BYU/Cincinnati Bengals. National champion recorded the longest punt (63 yards) in Super Bowl history in Super Bowl XXIII.

DE (2) – Joey Porter, CSU/Pittsburgh Steelers, multiple Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl title; Clark Haggans, CSU/Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. He and Porter teamed up again to win a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh, and he played in another with Cardinals.

DT (2) – Bob Lilly, TCU/Dallas Cowboys; Dominant Hall of Famer was part of the Doomsday Defense in Dallas; Manny Fernandez, Utah/Miami Dolphins. Can’t do better than an unbeaten Super Bowl season (1972). Special nod to Chad Hennings, AFA/Dallas Cowboys, Not many Academy players are even allowed to play pro football, much less excel like he did.

LB (3) – Rob Morris, BYU/Indianapolis Colts 2007; Starter at MLB in SB XLI when he and the Colts won their title; Brian Urlacher, New Mexico/Chicago Bears. Also a standout in Super Bowl XLI, but on the losing side; Robin Cole, New Mexico/Pittsburgh Steelers. Pro Bowler and twice Super Bowl champion with the Steel Curtain D.

CB (2) – Larry Brown, TCU/ Dallas Cowboys. MVP of Super Bowl XXX, first corner back to be so honored; Tom Holmoe, BYU/San Francisco 49ers won three Lombardi trophies and then became a successful AD at his alma mater.

S (2) - Brock Marion, Nevada/Dallas Cowboys. Two-time Super Bowl champ; John Howell, CSU/Tampa Bay Buccaneers & Seattle Seahawks. Super Bowl winner played in two.
