WBK: Rams Edge Out Win Against TCU

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's basketball team pulled through to win against TCU, 61-59, Saturday night at Moby Arena, as the game came down to the final seconds. The last time the Rams won against TCU was exactly 13 years ago on Feb. 11, 1999.

CSU (11-13, 7-2 MW) led only by one with two minutes remaining in the game. TCU (11-13, 5-4) was about to tie the game when junior Meghan Heimstra took a charge from TCU's Antoinette Thompson with 40 seconds left.

"I knew that she was going to drive, so it was good timing," said Heimstra.

Senior Kim Mestdagh was sent to the line with ten seconds left in the game and even though she missed the free throw, Heimstra collected the rebound. Still TCU had a chance to tie with five seconds left, but CSU came out with the win.

"TCU has always been the team to beat," said Mestdagh. "It's nice to beat them at home."

Both teams came out hot-shooting to begin the game. Mestdagh hit three three-pointers to score the first points for the Rams. CSU went on an 18-2 run to lead the Horned Frogs, 39-23 at half.

"The worst thing that happened in the first half was that halftime came," said Head Coach Kristen Holt.

The Horned Frogs came out strong in the second-half outscoring the Rams, 36-22, but CSU fought through to the end.

"In the second half we needed to get stops," said sophomore Hayley Thompson.

This is the largest attendance for the women's games since Dec. 3, 2008, with 1,950 in the seats.

"I'm glad we were able to pull out a win today with a crowd like that," said Holt.

Mestdagh had 21 points, which moves her up to fourth place in the all-time record book at CSU for career individual points at 1,616. She again tied her career high in assists with eight. She also had four rebounds and two steals.

"Kim is the big key of why we've done what we've done," said Holt. "She's solid in every phase of the game."

Heimstra now has 84 blocks for her career and is in fourth place in the all-time record book at CSU. She had seven rebounds, three assists, three rebounds and two steals for the game.

Thompson had a career high 14 points. She also had two steals and two rebounds.

With this win, Colorado State secures their second-place spot in the conference, while San Diego State sits in first. And the Rams aren't looking to slow down.

"We're going for first," said Heimstra.
