FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs used a three-run fourth inning to earn a 4-2 win over UNLV Friday night at Lupton Stadium. Stefan Crichton tossed six shut out innings and struck out five to lead the Frogs to victory. The TCU defense turned a trio of double plays to keep the Rebels in check.

Crichton improved to 4-0 with another solid performance on the mound. He allowed six hits and struck out five in the victory. Justin Scharf twirled two shut out innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Kaleb Merck was touched for two runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Rebels put the pressure on early as they got a pair of two out singles in the first, but Crichton got a fly out to end the inning, keeping the game scoreless.

UNLV's biggest threat in the game came in the third inning after Joey Swanner led off the frame with a double and moved to third with one out. Crichton struck out Mark Shannon for the second out in the inning, then got Trent Cook to fly out to end the threat.

Kevin Cron became the first base runner for the Frogs with one out in the third as he drew a walk. Keaton Jones worked a walk and Brance Rivera reached on catcher's interference to load the bases with only one. Kyle Von Tungeln put the Frogs in front 1-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The Frogs broke the game open in the fourth inning as they batted around and scored three times. Jantzen Witte got the Frogs rolling with a single to left. Brett Johnson reached on a bunt single and both runners advanced 90 feet on an errant throw by the pitcher. Jerrick Suiter worked a walk to load the bases and Cron made it a 2-0 ballgame with a single to left field. Keaton Jones followed with an RBI single to right center and Rivera capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

UNLV threatened to get back in the game as it loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh. Danny Higa's single loaded the bases, prompting a pitching change. Scharf did the job as he struck out Scott Dysinger for the first out then got Erik VanMeetren to ground into an inning-ending double play.

A walk and an error to open the eighth had the Rebels threatening again in the top of the eighth, but Scharf replicated the seventh inning as he got a strikeout and a double play to end the inning.

UNLV finally cracked the scoreboard in the ninth inning. A double by Cole Wilstead ended the shut out bid for the Frogs and an errant pick off throw made it a 4-2 contest. With a runner on second, Merck fanned the final two batters of the inning to lock up the victory for the Frogs.

TCU improves to 13-10 overall and 5-2 in league play. Game two of the series is set for 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Andrew Mitchell will toe the rubber for the Frogs and face the Rebels' Erick Fedde.
