AUSTIN, Texas - The series was billed as a pitcher's dual and game one of the 2010 NCAA Austin Regional didn't disappoint as Matt Purke and Tyler Lockwood led the No. 5 TCU Horned Frogs to a 3-1 victory over No. 2 Texas. Purke struck out 11 and limited the Longhorns to just three hits.
In 7 2/3 innings pitched, the left-handed freshman allowed just one run on three hits. He walked one, hit a batter and fanned 11 to improve to 14-0 on the season. Tyler Lockwood retired all four batters he faced to lock down his sixth save of the season.
The Frogs got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Matt Curry and Joe Weik teamed up on back-to-back singles to open up the frame. Jantzen Witte dropped down a two-strike bunt to advance the runners 90 feet and Aaron Schultz delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Frogs up 1-0.
Purke was solid, retiring the first eight batters he faced in the contest. A two-out base hit Jordan Etier turned into a jam for the Frogs as he stole second and moved to third on an errant throw. Purke got out of the jam, getting Cohl Walla to ground out to end the inning.
TCU threatened to add to its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jerome Pena worked a lead-off walk but was thrown out trying to steal. Brance Rivera followed with a single and Bryan Holaday reached on a two-out hit. Texas' starting pitcher Cole Green worked out of the jam, leaving the runners stranded.
On the mound, Purke continued to dominate as he allowed just two base runners until the eighth inning. After the first hit of the game in the third, he retired 11 of the next 12 batters he faced and 12 of the next 14. The lone hit was a solo home run off the bat of Kevin Keyes with two outs in the seventh, but the Frogs had already opened up a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Green ran into some control issues as he hit Taylor Featherston and walked Holaday to lead off the inning. Jason Coats sacrificed the runners over for the first out of the inning. While attempting to intentionally walk Matt Curry, Green unleashed an inside pitch that flew to the backstop, allowing Featherston to race home for a 2-0 lead. Weik came through with the Frogs' second sacrifice fly of the game to drive in Holaday to make it a 3-0 game.
Texas, again, threatened in the eighth inning with a pair of base runners. Kyle Lusson walked to lead off the inning, but Purked battled back to strike out Connor Rowe for the first out. Etier sacrificed Lusson to second for out No. 2, but Purke hit Walla to put two on with two out. Lockwood came on and got Brandon Loy to ground out to end the inning.
The Frogs improve to 50-11 on the season. They are just one win away from clinching their first-ever trip to the College World Series. Steven Maxwell will take the mound for TCU. Game time for Saturday's contest is set for Noon. The game will air live on ESPN in HD.
