Facebook

FORT WORTH--Four players scored in double figures as TCU earned its third-straight victory over cross-town rival SMU Tuesday during an 84-64 victory at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Frogs again shot above 50 percent from the field in earning their largest margin of victory over the Mustangs since 1997.

TCU moved to 2-0 for the second straight season and the fourth time in the last five years. SMU dropped to 0-2.

Fresh off a sizzling offensive performance in its season opener, TCU once again lit up the nets Tuesday. The Frogs shot 53.8 percent (35-of-65) overall from the floor, including 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from 3-point range. The squad is 22-for-38 (57.9 percent) from behind the arc through two games this season.

Junior guard Sammy Yeager and sophomore forward Garlon Green scored 17 points each to lead TCU. Yeager totaled game highs of nine rebounds, all on the defensive end, and four assists while shooting 7-of-14 from the floor. Green went 7-of-10, and both Frogs drilled a pair of treys. Junior guard Ronnie Moss followed up his 20-point performance in the season opener by totaling 16 points and five assists.

Junior point guard Hank Thorns recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. It marked the second straight game Thorns reached double figures in helpers after he set a career high with 10 in last Friday's season opener. He also went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc against the Mustangs.

SMU featured three players in double figures. Forward Robert Nyakundi led the squad with 14 points, while center Papa Dia and forward Justin Haynes totaled 11 and 10 points, respectively.

TCU took control of the game midway through the first half with a 20-2 run to climb on top by 20 points, 35-25. Thorns put on a passing clinic, totaling four assists during one three-and-a-half minute stretch. Included in the sput were a trio of 3-pointers by Moss, Green and Thorns sandwiched around an alley-oop dunk by Green from Thorns. Fields finished off the run with a dunk off a beautiful feed from Thorns on the fastbreak.

SMU responded with a 10-0 run of its own, but a Thorns trey with 45 seconds left in the half put the Frogs up 49-35 heading into the locker room. TCU was on fire from the field in the opening period, drilling 20 of its 31 field-goal attempts.

The Frogs pushed back to a 20-point advantage just minutes into the second half, and the Mustangs were unable to climb back within more than 15 points the remainder of the game. The lead grew to as many as 23 points with 3:03 left in the second half.

TCU looks to continue the momentum built off its season-opening homestand as it takes to the road for the first time this season Nov. 20-22 at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament in Springfield, Mass. The Frogs first face Rider on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT, followed by games against Bradley on Sunday at 4 p.m. and UMass on Monday at 7 p.m.
