BB: San Diego State Falls To Kansas State 7-2

SAN DIEGO - Kansas State got some timely hitting and a solid outing rom starter Kayvon Bahramzadeh as it defeated San Diego State, 7-2, Thursday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory allowed the Wildcats to even their record at 2-2 while SDSU (1-4) lost for the fourth time in its first five outings of the 2012 season.

Aztecs starter Cole Swanson struggled with his control from the outset as Kansas State opened the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Blair Debord's single drove home Tanner Wit and Jared King who had walked and single respectively with one out.

The visitors added three more to their total in the third. All three runs came with two outs after King has doubled as the second batter of the inning. An RBI single by Wade Hinkle was followed by a pair of walks to load the bases, and Dan Klein cashed in with a two-run single to make it a 5-0 contest.

That rally spelled the end of the evening for Swanson, who finished with five runs allowed (four earned) on five hits along with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Junior right-hander Ryan Doran came on and finished out the final six frames on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in a solid relief performance. Bahramzadeh, meanwhile, held the Aztecs in check over his six innings of work. The Aztecs' first hit =did not come until the fifth inning, a single to left by freshman third baseman Ryan Muno.

SDSU did finally get to the Wildcat starter in the sixth, scoring a run on a leadoff single to right by Jake Romanski followed by an infield single off the bat of Evan Potter. Cody Smith's single to right brought home Romanski, but Bahramzadeh retired the next three batters to extinguish the threat. He would be credited with the win to improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Aztecs' only other offensive highlight came in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman John Spirk took a pitch from Wildcat reliever Nate Williams deep over the left field fence for his first collegiate home run.

San Diego State finished the contest with just five total hits as no Aztec had more than one on the night.

SDSU continues play at home Friday evening (Feb. 24) when it hosts 21st-ranked Oregon State in a contest scheduled to commence at 6:00 p.m.at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
