VB: Rebels Drop Cowgirls Three Sets to Two

Las Vegas, NV - The UNLV Rebels (6-11, 2-2 MWC) knocked off the Wyoming Cowgirls (16-3, 2-2 MWC) Thursday night in five sets by a 3-2 margin in the Cox Pavilion. UNLV got double-doubles from Sara Nehf and Kendra Glendenning, as they won by set scores of 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-10.

The Cowgirls started the fifth with momentum carried over from their fourth-set victory. Wyoming opened up the fifth and final frame with three consecutive points and four of the first five before UNLV got on track. The Rebels then rambled off four straight tallies to claim a brief 5-4 lead before the Cowgirls knotted things up at 5-5. The teams traded the next two scores to bring the frame even again at 6-6. The Rebels quickly scored three of the next four to stake themselves to an insurmountable three-point lead at 10-7. UNLV eventually won by a five-point margin, 15-10, to claim the set and match.

In both of UNLV's first- and third-set victories, the team took command of the frame in the waning stages. It wasn't until the Rebels neared the 20-point mark in each stanza before they claimed it for their own. Wyoming, on the other hand, had both of its victories declared earlier.

The Rebels have now won eight of the last nine meetings between the two squads and extended their overall lead in the series to 19-12.

Nehf notched her eighth career double-double in the match and the first of the season with a combination of 15 kills and a season-high 20 digs. She also contributed two assisted blocks and one assist.

Glendenning used assists and digs to comprise her third double-double of the year with 22 and 13, respectively.

Makenzie Moea'i and Kelsey Keeler joined Nehf in the double-digit kill department, as Moea'i threw down 12 to Keeler's 10. Moea'I added three digs, while Keeler had six digs, five assisted blocks, three assists and one ace.

Amanda Alles chipped in 20 assists, as she split setting duties with Glendenning, and also had four digs, two assisted blocks and one kill.
Kela Lau Hee rounded out the trio of Rebels with 10 or more digs with her team-high 20.

Candice Thomas came up big at the net with her seven assisted blocks. Thomas also had five kills and three digs.

Wyoming got a double-double from Jodi Purdy, the reigning MWC Player of the Week, with her team-high 13 kills and 10 digs. Calli Miller and Reese Roehrkasse notched double-digits in kills, as well, with 11 and 10, respectively.

Barbara Lasic topped all Cowgirls in assists with 32, while Rachel Keyes had 16 of her own.

Jadranka Tramosljanin led all defensive players in the match with a tally of 31 digs.

The Rebels return to action Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 pm tussle with the #17 Colorado State Rams. The match has been declared "Dig Pink Day" with all fans wearing pink will get in for only $1. The Rebels will partner with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help spread awareness for breast cancer.
