Knudson: Picks Coming Down the Homestretch
By Mark Knudson, The Mtn. InsiderNovember 24, 2011 Hats off to TCU for winning another Mountain West football championship. While not the dominating team they were in 2010, these Horned Frogs did it the hard way by winning the de facto title game on the blue turf and deserve a ton of credit.
As things stand going into the Thanksgiving weekend, both the Horned Frogs and the Boise State Broncos are technically still alive for a BCS berth though neither is unbeaten. Go figure.
Meanwhile, the positioning for bowl slots is on going and this week’s games will have a big influence on that.
Our picks went 4-0 last week and we stand at 47-14 on the year.
Game of the Week: Wyoming (7-3, 4-1) at Boise State (9-1, 4-1) Both teams are bowl bound and where each is going is the only question. For Boise State, they could still make the BCS if they win their last two and a couple of other things go their way. At worst, it looks like Las Vegas for the Broncos. For Wyoming, they have already knocked off SDSU and Air Force and are looking like a solid No. 3 in the Mountain West, this week not withstanding.
Boise State 41, Wyoming 24
Air Force (7-4, 3-3) at Colorado State (3-7, 1-4) It hasn’t been the kind of season either team was expecting. For Air Force, this was going to be Troy Calhoun’s best team yet, and while they will be bowl bound once again, falling behind SDSU and Wyoming in the Conference is a disappointment. For the Rams, a shot at a bowl game went by the boards with midseason losses to San Jose State and UNLV. The Colorado State faithful can now look forward to seeing what freshman QB Garrett Grayson can do against their two Conference rivals starting with the Falcons. Grayson adds a new dimension against an Air Force defense that’s struggled.
Colorado State 27, Air Force 24
San Diego State (6-4, 3-3) at UNLV (2-8, 1-4) These are two teams no one can quite figure out. The Aztecs look great at times and lost at others. Ronnie Hillman is a stud and Ryan Lindley will be playing on Sundays. The kicking situation has been awful and the wide receiving corps a weakness. Will they bring their “A Game” to Las Vegas? The young Rebels have shown some spark at times, but just when you think they’ve got it going, they lose to New Mexico and the flu bug.
Expect a great effort out of the Rebels on Senior Day, but too much Hillman.
San Diego State 33, UNLV 20
