WBK: TCU Loses to Georgia at Buzzer

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU fired back to take a five-point lead in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Georgia's Anne Marie Armstrong nailed a three from 28-feet out in the closing seconds to give the Lady Bulldogs a 60-57 victory over the Horned Frogs Wednesday night.
Armstrong helped UGA snap TCU's 27-game home winning streak, which coming into the game ranked No. 3 currently in the NCAA. The Horned Frogs last loss at home came on Jan. 13, 2009 to BYU.

Emily Carter led three Frogs in double figures, scoring 18 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the floor. Carter netted 16 of her 18 points in the second half of play. Helena Sverrisdottir posted 14 points, while Starr Crawford, who saw her first action in three games, recorded 10 points.

Overall, the Horned Frogs turned up the defensive pressure Wednesday night, limiting Georgia, who is receiving votes in both national polls, to only 34.4 percent from the floor, including 15.4 percent from behind the arc in the second half.

The Lady Bulldogs, who led by as many as 16, were aided by Porsha Phillips, who posted 18 points, while Armstrong scored 15 points, including the game-winner in the closing seconds of the game.

With TCU up 57-55 with a minute left to play, Georgia tied the game at 57-57 on a fast break lay-up by Armstrong. Armstrong's trey with 3 seconds left on the clock gave UGA its first lead in 8 minutes of play.

Crawford's put-back brought TCU within one at the 7:46 mark of the second half and TCU was in business. Gross put the Frogs ahead at the 5:53 mark of the second period on a tough put-back inside the paint. The sophomore, who got fouled on the play, gave TCU a 48-46 advantage. Gross then connected on a three from the left side of the court to continue TCU's onslaught on the offensive end. Gross's three, which electrified a raucous crowd inside Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, was part of a 15-2 run for the Horned Frogs.

Carter got the Frogs' on the board early in the second period, draining a three from the left side of the court to bring TCU within seven. The All-America candidate drilled another three on the very next possession and TCU forced two-straight offensive turnovers to make the score 37-33 in slight favor of the Lady Bulldogs.

The senior continued her hot-shooting a few moments later, sliding through the Lady Bulldog defense to bring TCU within four at 39-35. Following a mini-run by UGA, Carter sank back-to-back free throws and a tough turn around jumper to cut into the Georgia lead with less then 10 minutes to go in the half.

Carter then got into the action on the defensive end of the floor, stripping UGA guard Jasmine James. On the play, James tried to cross over Carter, who swiped the ball away from the sophomore and proceeded to get fouled on the other end.

Crawford made her return to the lineup a successful one, scoring the Frogs first points of the contest off an assist from Carter. A three by Sverrisdottir, who scored eight of the Frogs first 10 points, a few moments later increased the Purple and White lead early to 5-3.

The senior's three with a little over 15 minutes to go, brought the Frogs within two at 12-10, but Georgia continued its hot shooting from deep, draining a three of their own to move the lead back to five.

Following a 7-2 run by Georgia, TCU cut into the deficit when senior Micah Garoutte found the bottom of the net on a turn-around jumper to make the score 22-17 at the 8:33 mark of the first half.

Crawford scored a bucket down the stretch and Sverrisdottir knocked down four-straight free throws to bring the halftime score to 36-27 at the break.

TCU will next be in action on Dec. 30 against Texas Southern.
