May 17, 2010COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior Justin Howard, Utah sophomore C.J. Cron and TCU freshman Matt Purke have been named Mountain West Conference Co-Players and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the second career weekly honor for Purke, and first for both Howard and Cron.
Howard went 12-for-14 (.857) in New Mexico's three-game sweep of non-conference foe Delaware State over the weekend. He had four doubles and two stolen bases while driving in 11 runs and scoring six more in the series. In Friday's 10-2 victory, the Ennis, Texas, native was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored, one double and one stolen base. He followed that performance with a 3-for-4 effort in Saturday's 19-2 win, walking twice while collecting four RBI and two runs scored. Howard closed out the series with a 4-for-5 outing in Sunday's 16-5 decision, registering four RBI, two runs scored, three doubles, one walk and one stolen base. For the week, he tallied a 1.143 slugging percentage and .882 on-base percentage. Defensively, he was perfect in the field, recording 36 putouts with one assist while splitting time between first base and the outfield.
Cron hit .467 (7-of-15) in the three-game series with UNLV, finishing the weekend with four doubles, two home runs, six runs scored and 14 runs batted in. In Friday's 12-11 loss, the Phoenix, Ariz., product hit an RBI double in the ninth inning and scored a run as part of a five-run rally attempt that brought Utah to within a run in the final frame. In Saturday's 25-5 triumph, Cron led the Utes with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, scoring four runs and driving in eight more. He hit a bases-loaded double in the third inning to send three runs across the plate and launched a grand slam home run in the sixth inning. In Sunday's victory, Cron's two-RBI double in the top of the ninth inning proved to be the game-winning hit as it provided the final 11-10 margin for the Utes. He went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and a homer in the contest, driving in five runs and scoring one more. For the week, Cron posted a 1.133 slugging percentage and .529 on-base percentage. Defensively, he recorded 29 putouts and three assists with one error while pulling double duty at catcher and first base.
Purke, a native of Spring, Texas, picked up his 10th win of the season after working the final six innings of a suspended game against Air Force last Friday. The freshman lefthander fanned a career-high 12 batters while scattering five hits and surrendering a lone earned run and one intentional walk over the six frames. Purke recorded eight consecutive strikeouts to open his stint on the mound and held the Falcons scoreless over the final five innings, retiring the last four batters in succession.
