BB: UNM Defeats UNLV to Set Up Title Game with TCU
BOX SCOREMay 28. 2010SAN DIEGO, Calif. -Senior shortstop Daniel Gonzalez's bases-loaded triple highlighted a seven-run first inning on Friday as New Mexico beat UNLV 10-3 in the 2010 Conoco Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The win advanced the No. 2-seeded Lobos (37-19) to Friday night's championship game against No. 1 seed TCU (45-11) at 7 p.m. PT. A New Mexico victory would force a second meeting with the Horned Frogs in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
New Mexico, which is 20-1 this season when scoring 10 or more runs, sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning. The Lobos jumped out to a 3-0 lead following run-scoring singles by catcher Rafael Neda, designated hitter Ryan Honeycutt and left fielder Cameron Smith. Gonzalez, who is hitting .750 in tournament play, followed with a triple to right-center and later scored on a wild pitch, pushing the Lobos' lead to 7-0.
Leadoff hitter Adam Courcha went 3-for-3 for the Lobos, while starting pitcher Rudy Jaramillo (4-2) went 7 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out a season-high four batters.
Junior first baseman Drew Beuerlein went 3-for-4 for UNLV, which finished the season with a 29-29 record.
