November 4, 2010

Top-seeded New Mexico defeated fifth-seeded UNLV in double overtime, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the victory, the Lobos advance to Saturday's final against the winner of the # 2 BYU vs. # 3 San Diego State match at noon PT. The title game will be streamed live www.TheMtn.tv and air via same-day tape delay on The Mtn. at 11 p.m. PT. The contest will also re-air on Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. PT.

"We've known it all season, but this group continues to show great character and composure," New Mexico head coach Kit Vela said. "I think this is an amazing group of young women."
UNLV took a 1-0 lead in the first half at 10:58 when Caitlin Allen headed her shot past New Mexico goalkeeper Kelli Cornell. The Lobos answered right back before the half at 43:43 when Natalie Jenks found the back of the net to level the score.

In the second half, both teams traded possession back and forth that led to many opportunities. Still, each defense and goalkeeper stood tall, taking the match into overtime. It was more of the same in the first overtime with each team attacking, yet unable to find the back of the net.

It appeared the game would be headed to a shootout until New Mexico's Kate Wyrick blasted a shot into the right side from eight yards out for the match-winner.

The top-seeded Lobos won the shot battle, 18-12, and had seven of the game's nine corner kicks.
