MGLF: CSU Claims Mountain West Title

TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time in three years, the Colorado State men’s golf team are Mountain West Conference champions. They become the second team at CSU to win a conference championship this year; the volleyball team claimed the MWC regular-season title this fall.
The Rams secured the title Saturday afternoon on the Catalina Course at Tucson National. The team total of 834 shattered the previous low team score at the MWC championship of 844 (set by San Diego State and TCU in 2009).
Junior Ryan Peterson claimed the individual title by going 8-under-par on the tournament. He becomes the first Ram to win at the MWC championship since Martin Laird in 2002.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel believed that Peterson’s consistency was pivotal in his success this week.
“He kept driving it down the middle and hitting the green,” Bermel explained. “He hardly made any mistakes all week. He just played solid. It’s a great win for him, his first in college.”
Peterson had another very solid round Saturday, carding 13 pars and three birdies to come in two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Eddie Olson of No. 17 UNLV.
Bermel was pleased by more than just Peterson’s play.
“We played well again today,” Bermel said. “We played well all week. Everyone contributed at least two rounds. We were solid from top to bottom.”
As proof, the three Rams seniors finished in the top 10. Bryce Hanstad shot 3-under-par Saturday to help the Rams extend their lead over runner up No. 25 San Diego State. Hanstad finished with a 211 in fourth place.
Riley Arp tied for fifth after firing a 72 Saturday to finish with a 212. Recording the low round of the day, Dustin Morris shot a 6-birdie 67 to move up into a tie for seventh place with a 213 three-round-total.
Zahkai Brown finished 21st in the 45-man field with a 218. Brown carded a 78 Saturday due in part to double bogies on Holes 4 and 13.
The No. 35 Rams will be back on the course May 20-22 at the NCAA regional tournament to take the next step toward a national title.
