SB: Cougars 7-2 Win Secures Championship
Box ScoreMay 15, 2010SALT LAKE CITY - After being held scoreless for the first six innings, the Utes managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh innings but the University of Utah softball team's comeback fell short against BYU, 7-2 in nine innings, during a Deseret First Duel game in the Mountain West Conference finale Saturday at Ute Softball Field.
Utah (26-29, 4-11 MWC) received a solid performance from starting right-hander Ashley Smuda, who allowed only two earned runs on eight hits through the first eight innings of the contest. For the game, she allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits with one walk and five strikeouts. With the loss, Smuda finished the 2010 season with a 20-15 mark in decisions.
Offensively, the Utes had five hits from five different players: Brooke Olson, Hannah Clements, Whitney Holm, Kelsi Hoopiiaina, and Lindsey Palmer.
Facing a 2-0 deficit Utah started its game-tying, seventh-inning rally when Hoopiiaina singled then Tia Palauni drew a walk before Palmer drove an RBI single over the Cougar second baseman for Utah's first run of the contest. Palauni later scored on a ground ball hit by Olson to the BYU shortstop.
Unfortunately, BYU put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth inning and Utah was unable to tie the contest.
The Cougars started the scoring in the contest during the top of the second inning when Andrea Ramirez hit the first pitch she saw from Smuda over the left-center field wall to put BYU up 1-0.
BYU (43-11, 12-3 MWC) put another run on the board in the sixth frame when Angeline Quiocho singled down the right-field line and took second base on a wild pitch. She moved to third after a pair of walks then was driven across home plate after an RBI single to left field was hit by Delaney Willard. The Cougars' Paige Affleck picked up her 30th win of the year after going all nine innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Affleck finished the regular season with a 30-8 record.
The Utes fell to 2-1 in extra-inning games this season and finished 7-3 in contests played at Ute Softball Field.
Utah honored its four departing seniors in a postgame ceremony: Smuda, Palmer, Kara Foster, and Tori Medina.
